I've been to many writers workshops, watching and
participating in the growth of writers. One of my favorite myths perpetuated is
that "Writing is an art, and as such, there are no rules". It is a tell tale
statement, delineating those who are serious from those who are not.
It is true, writing is an art. It is also true that in all
art, the masters did break the rules. But the rules are there none the less, and
the masters knew the rules before breaking them. The rules are broken to
make a statement, to be bold, to be creative, not out of ignorance or laziness.
A good editor knows the
rules, and can spot when they are being broken intentionally, or inadvertently,
and when they contribute and when they detract from your writing. A good editor
adapts to your style, and tightens your work.
